More on Mylyn Connector for ScrumWorks

I have released a preview version of the Mylyn Connector for ScrumWorks that I have blogged about some time ago. There is now a google group that hosts the update site.

I call this a “preview” version because this is a read-only version of the connector. After giving it some thought, I have decided not to make this open source. It is funny, whenever I do something related to Eclipse I assume that it should be open source. However, After struggling with my reflexes for a while I reached the conclusion that open sourcing this plugin is not really essential for Eclipse.

If you are using ScrumWorks and Mylyn, please give a try and provide feedback on the group, it will be highly appreciated.

what did lead you to deny you initial reflex and not to opensource your connector?

Does this require the profession or free version of Scrumworks?

@trisa The biggest benefit of this plugin is to the company that makes ScrumWorks. They do not seem to have interest in creating Eclipse plugins. I do not predict that there will be interest to contribute to this work from others. As a result, I do not wish to create yet another OSS project with possibly single developer.

@dave The plugin is tested with ScrumWorks Pro versions 3.0 and 3.1 only.

Gorkem, this challenge of deciding whether or not to open source a Mylyn connector is quite familiar to me. I'm even thinking that we should write guidelines on how we make these decisions internally at Tasktop, but it has generally followed the pattern of whether the underlying repository is open source or not. If you're interested in chatting more about this, or figuring out ways to promote a closed source Mylyn connector, just drop me a line (first name at tasktop.com).

Fyi, I recently wrote a related blog entry and will be publishing an interview about this on my blog later in the week.

Hi Gorkem,

My name is Victor Szalvay, I'm the Product Owner for the ScrumWorks product line at Danube. First, thanks for offering a Mylyn plug-in; we tried it yesterday and it rocks! We've been meaning to build one ourselves but obviously haven't done it yet.

We're very interested in contributing to it or helping with the maintenance and upkeep. Please contact me at my first name at danube dot com as we'd like to discuss the future of the product with you.

Regards,
-- Victor

@Mik Actually the closed repository was a big criteria. I would love to chat.

@Victor I am glad, you liked the functionality. It is important that someone from ScrumWorks product finds it useful. Actually the full version of the plugin which allows updates to ScrumWorks is much better.
